FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a top entry mixer used for?+
A top entry mixer mounts on the tank roof with the shaft and impeller entering from above. It's the most widely used configuration for reactors and process tanks that need high torque, multiple impeller stages, or operation under vacuum or pressure.
What's the difference between the HP and NP series?+
The HP series is rated for pressurized reactors from vacuum up to 150 bar and higher temperatures (-40°C to 350°C), used in chemical and pharmaceutical processes. The NP series is built for atmospheric processes (-20°C to 200°C) such as blending, dissolution and solids suspension. Both are offered in M (Medium Duty) and H (Heavy Duty) models.
How do I size a top entry mixer for my tank?+
Sizing depends on tank volume, fluid viscosity, specific gravity and the process goal (blending, suspension, heat transfer, reaction). Mechanimix engineers calculate impeller diameter, speed and motor power from your process data, validated with CFD analysis where needed.
Can a top entry mixer be used on a pressurized reactor?+
Yes — the HP series is specifically designed for pressurized and vacuum-rated reactors, with mechanical seal options (single, double or dry) or magnetic coupling for zero-leakage duties, and shaft materials up to Hastelloy and titanium.
When should I choose a side entry mixer instead of a top entry mixer?+
Side entry mixers are generally preferred for very large storage tanks where top access is impractical or costly. Top entry mixers remain the standard choice for process reactors, multi-stage mixing and applications requiring higher torque or pressure ratings.
Does a top entry mixer need baffles, and how does baffle-less operation affect power?+
It depends on flow regime. In turbulent, lower-viscosity duties, baffles (or an off-center/angled mount) break up the central vortex; without them the fluid can rotate as a solid body with little top-to-bottom exchange, so removing baffles lowers the power number but also cuts real mixing effectiveness. In high-viscosity laminar processes — where the NP and HP series often run near-atmospheric to moderate-viscosity fluids and the HVM/HWM impeller range handles the more viscous end — no vortex forms at low Reynolds numbers, so baffle-less operation is common and doesn't sacrifice performance. Our engineering team confirms whether your tank needs baffles, an off-center mount, or neither based on your process viscosity and Reynolds number.
